Renewable hybrid project tied to Amazon PPA reaches commercial operations
Amazon’s PPA-backed Renewable Hybrid Project Reaches Commercial Operations
Amazon to be the primary buyer of energy to power its California facilities
Amazon has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to obtain energy from AES from two of its new solar storage facilities in Adelanto, San Bernardino County, California.
Amazon to be the primary offtaker of the energy to power its facilities in California
Full details of the PPA have not yet been released. However, AES said Amazon will be the primary purchaser of the project’s energy and will use it to power its California facilities.
The Baldy Mesa project opened on October 24 and includes 150 MW of solar PV generation capacity and a 75 MW/300 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The smaller Silver Peak project consists of 50 MW of solar PV with 25 MW/100 MWh of BESS.
The project is part of a larger power generation portfolio that Amazon has acquired to power its data center portfolio in California and Arizona, totaling 1.5 GW of generation. This is the third major renewable energy supply agreement signed between Amazon and AES. In May 2022, Amazon signed two PPAs to supply the company with its California operations. As part of the agreements, AES will supply renewable energy into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market and will source it from a combined total of 450 MW of solar and 225 MW of 4-hour BESS from its project portfolio.
