New 8 kW Offering to Be Available in 2025
Infineon has introduced a series of new power supply unit (PSU) solutions to meet the power needs of AI data centers.
Building on the chipmaker’s current 3 kW power supply offering, 3.3 kW, 8 kW, and 12 kW power supplies will soon be available to customers. According to Infineon, the power supplies will combine silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN) in a “strategic configuration,” which the company says will enable its 8 kW power supply to achieve benchmark efficiency and power density of 100 W/in3, compared to 32 W/in3 for the 3 kW unit.
The 8 kW power supply can also support AI racks with power levels up to 300 kW and beyond and will be available to customers starting in Q1 2025. While no release date was given for the 12 kW offering, the company said that when it becomes available, it will be the world’s first power supply to reach that power level.
In a statement, Infineon said that the growth of server and data center applications has led to increased power demand, requiring it to upgrade its power supplies to support higher power levels. The company said it has worked with data center operators and power supply manufacturers to develop the solutions.
“With the introduction of our roadmap and our latest development, the 8 kW power supply, Infineon continues to lead the way in providing innovative Si, SiC and GaN-based solutions that address the changing infrastructure needs of AI,” said Adam White, president of Infineon’s Sensors and Energy Systems division. He added: “This latest addition to our portfolio and the upcoming 12 kW power supply exemplify Infineon’s commitment to delivering benchmark results in high performance, efficiency and reliability for the data center and AI ecosystem.”
